Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
