The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the nation's leader began displaying all observers his designs for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions of the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to build it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of fatalities resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and this week research projected his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have dared – truly, no other president would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As disorienting as it is to observe the leader seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense regarding him because they identify as atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.

Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and clear fact that the Savior of the gospels calls for a type of radical love focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christianity something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality requiring to be restrained. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Best of Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to see the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags during all protests and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.

The nation is most protected, to put it differently, by reference to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured through connection to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the most damaging regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it signifies both modesty and faith, a blend that genuine American Christians should embrace.
