The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
