The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
