Disturbing Video Captures Point Officers Are Stabbed in Unexpected Assault
A police sergeant who rushed to the aid of a colleague that got attacked by a knife attacker received the Royal Recognition for Courage.
Sgt Tim Ansell struggled against 27-year-old Jacob Brown subsequent to he placed a weapon to the neck of his partner Sergeant Marc Foster.
Brown launched his attack as the policemen and their partner, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were speaking to a motorist following a road collision in Whalley Range in summer 2023.
Brown knifed and cut both Sgt Ansell and Sergeant Foster prior to PC Wolstencroft stopped him with a electric weapon.
"Officer attacked," the constable stated over his radio.
Officer-mounted and vehicle camera video shared by the force showed Brown, who was dressed in black with a hood up, rush to Sgt Foster from behind with a knife extended.
He ran into the policeman who stumbled and dropped to the street, before Sgt Ansell jumped in and struggled to restrain him to the pavement although being multiple times hit with the weapon.
PC Wolstencroft drew his Taser and waited for a open target, ending the confrontation to an finish.
Sgt Ansell can be heard to say: "Please provide help on my throat now, I've been stabbed in the neck."
Sergeant Ansell received two open wounds to his neck and more injuries to his arms and torso, while Sergeant Foster experienced knife wounds.
Authorities reported Sergeant Foster used his bare hands to stem his fellow officer's bleeding prior to emergency responders arrived.
This most recent honor follows after the trio of policemen were granted organizational Bravery Awards in fall 2023 and the John Egerton Bravery Award from the local union branch in April 2024.
They further earned a Area Bravery Award in July 2024.
"The responses of all three officers in the end protected one another and meant no civilians endured any wounds."
Brown received a sentence to an psychiatric detention in spring 2024, per the department.
